Obituary

Retired Army Captain Heber M. Hughes, 88, passed away at his home in Fayetteville on Friday, September 22, 2006. Mr. Hughes served with valor and bravery for more than 30 years in the Army, as an infantryman in the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, 7th US Army in World War II. He received a battlefield commission and later served in Korea, retiring in 1967, but he never truly left the service. A recipient of two purple hearts, a Bronze Star, the Korean Service Medal with seven Bronze Service Stars and several wartime service medals. Mr. Hughes was a former member of the New Hope United Methodist Church and a member of Main Post Chapel on Fort Bragg. A graveside service with Military Honors was held at 2 pm, Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at the New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery in Rowesville, SC with the Rev. Zack Farmer officiating. Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Rosa; a daughter, Annette Peoples and her husband, James; grandchildren, Air Force CPT. Jim Peoples and Jamie Kernohan; and great-grandchildren, Sean Kernohan and Kaylee Peoples.
