Obituary

Henrietta M. Underwood FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Henrietta McLaurin McMillan Underwood, 88, of Fayetteville, died unexpectedly but peacefully a few minutes before midnight on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was born in Lumber Bridge, Aug. 15, 1922, the child of William Francis McMillan and Elizabeth \\"Tiny\\" Walter Gibson McMillan. She was a devoted wife and mother, and friend of countless people. She met Hamilton Polk Underwood Jr. when he was a young pharmacist with MacKethan's Drug Store, opposite the Market House. They married on April 12, 1945, at Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church. Their marriage lasted more than 65 years. They were blessed with two sons, Hamilton, born in 1951, and David, born in 1957; and two grandchildren. Henrietta was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, virtually all her adult life. She was active with Women of the Church, served as a circle chairman, and was member of the Emma Lee Howie Bible class. She was a leader of a Brownie Scout troop. She was a member of Robert Rowan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Study Club and Pine Needles Garden Club. She is survived by her husband, Hamilton, 93; and their two sons and their families, Hamilton Polk Underwood III and his wife, Laurel Louise Purvis Underwood, of Roswell, Ga., and David MacKethan Underwood and his wife, Ellen Margery Shulman Underwood of Scottsdale, Ariz., and their daughters, Erica Lauren Underwood and Elizabeth Ann Underwood. She is also survived by a nephew, Erasmus Hervey Evans Jr. of Fayetteville; a niece, Ellen Haigh Evans Jordan and her husband, Carl, of Fayetteville, their son, Everard Baker Jordan and his wife, Kathryn Britton O'Hanlon Jordan and their daughter, Catharine Briley Jordan; and a daughter, Katherine Evans Jordan Christiano and her husband, Jose Guilherme Christiano and their son, Lucas Guilherme Christiano, recently of Baltimore. Family burial will be followed by a memorial service at Highland Presbyterian Church, 111 Highland Ave., in Fayetteville, on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at 11 a.m. Dr. J. Ernest Johnson and Dr. Ewart Wyle Jr. will conduct the service. Patrick Murphy O'Briant will be the organist. Barbara Lawson will be the soloist. A visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Highland Presbyterian Church, 111 Highland Ave., P.O.
