Obituary

Mr. Henry C. Cuningham, Jr., 61, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013, to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born in Durham, NC, Mr. Cuningham was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Carrington Cuningham, Sr., and Mary Lee Cowper Cuningham. In his youth he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Troop 412 in Durham. After graduating high school in Durham, he attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and graduated with honors in History and a degree in English. After extensive travels in Europe, Africa, Mexico, Central America and South America, Henry began working as a journalist. In 1984 he took a job with the Fayetteville Publishing Company and since 1987 has been covering the military for The Fayetteville Observer. In his many years of experience, he faithfully reported for the newspaper and provided honest, accurate coverage as Military Editor. In life and in passing he has been well respected by the community he served for his sincere inquisitive nature and unassuming wealth of knowledge. He leaves behind to mourn and cherish his memory: wife of 27 years, Belinda K. Cuningham; son, John Carrington Cuningham, of the home; sister, Mary C. Cuningham of Florida; father-in-law, Wilfred Kulbeck, of Fayetteville; sister-in-law, June Millard and her husband Thomas Millard, Jr., both of Wilmington, NC; nieces Lauren White and Leslie Millard, of Wilmington; as well as extended family in Texas, California, Florida and North Carolina. Family was integral to Mr. Cuningham's life, and he will be greatly missed by them all. The family will receive visitors Friday, August 30, at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey Street, from 6 to 8 pm; and a memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday, August 31, at Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Ft. Bragg Road. The burial will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers please consider memorials to WCPE, the classical radio station, of which Henry was an avid listener and supporter, or a donation to the Clara McLean House at FirstHealth, Pinehurst, NC, which provided housing and support to his family during Henry's illness. Henry was blessed to have made so many friends throughout his life. He quietly bids you adieu until he has the pleasure of greeting you again.
