Obituary

Fayetteville, NC - Ret. MSG Henry D. Otten died on Monday, August 28, 2017. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Hannelore Otten, and his four children, Henry Otten, Dorothy Otten Funkhouser, Caterine Otten Galaud and Christina Otten Toner, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Henry was born on February 12, 1931 in Portland, OR to Paul and Frieda Otten. He grew up in Germany and returned to the United States to join the US Army. He was stationed in Berlin, Germany, where he met his bride and was married in 1957. During his thirty-year military career, Henry served in the Vietnam War, had assignments in Korea, in Germany and in the United States, working in Military Intelligence. Upon his retirement in Fort Bragg, he began work as an Intelligence Analyst in civil service for fifteen years. Henry was always passionately active in the communities where he lived, and was appreciated by many. He held several leadership roles in scouting while in North Carolina and in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. He actively worked with and sponsored an orphanage while stationed in Korea. Henry was a Defensive Driving Instructor in Fort Hood, TX, and here in Fayetteville he taught in the Adult Literacy Program through the Fayetteville Urban Ministries. Also here, in his retirement home of Fayetteville, Henry worked actively promoting recycling which helped implement the recycling program in our city. Henry gave many hours as a volunteer for the Fayetteville Police Department and at the Seabrook Community Resource Center. Henry's greatest joy came by spending time with family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed people and caring for them, taking pleasure in advocating for others. He loved writing, always sending letters and cards to many. Henry enjoyed camping with his family. Being with family and friends was a highlight for him, celebrating life. Another favorite past-time of Henry's was collecting stamps and sharing them with his family. Henry Otten was a long-time member of Haymount United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir and participating in various groups throughout his lifetime. Henry was also a Mason since 1960. A Memorial Service will be held at Haymount United Methodist Church on September 5, 2017. Visitation begins at 11 am; the Service will begin at 12 noon; and the burial will be at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
