Obituary

Henry Thomas "Tom" Jackson Henry Thomas "Tom" Jackson, 79, of Fayetteville died Sunday, May 4, 2014 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was the son of the late Fred and Callie Jackson and was also preceded in death by sisters Annie Lou Jackson, Agnes Jackson and a brother Ellis Jackson. He is survived by a sister, Grace Devane (Bill) and their children Craig Devane (Angie) and Lori Davis (Buddy), Sister-in-law Mrs. Patsy Jackson (Ellis) and her two children Martin Jackson (Hope) and Jennifer Marley (Shane). There are also several Great nieces and nephews. Tom graduated from Clement High School in 1953 and Appalachian State University in 1957 earning a B S Degree in Science and Social Studies. He taught at Pine Forest High School for 47 years from 1957 to 2004. He was the adviser for the boys Key Club for several years and coached several sports accomplishing the following records and receiving cited awards: He was Head Basketball Varsity Girls Coach for 44 years and retired with a record of 650 wins and 391 losses. His teams were Conference Champions 14 times and advanced to the NC State Championship Title Game in 1985 and 1986. Tom coached the East Team All Stars for the 1979 East-West All Star Game and the NC-SC Inaugural All Star Girls Basketball game. Tom's teams advanced to post season play 30 times and posted winning seasons 36 times during a 46 year span. In 1982-83 and 1985-86 he was named the Associated Press NC Coach of the Year. He was also recognized as Coach of the Year four times by the Fayetteville Sports Club and voted as Conference Coach of the Year 12 times by his peers. In 1989 he was recognized as the NCHSAA and NCAA male coach of the year. Tom served as Varsity Girls Softball Coach for 10 years. His teams won three Conference Championships and he was named as Conference Coach of the year one time. Serving as Junior Varsity Football Head Coach for 11 years his teams won eight Conference Championships. The team's record was 75 wins and 25 losses including a winning streak that extended for a span of 38 games. Tom also coached Boys and Girls Cross Country teams. The girls won the Conference Championship three times and the boys won once. The teams participated in Post Season runs five times. He was recognized as Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year two times and Cross Country Appreciation Award two times. Further honors and recognitions received by Tom were: Because of his leadership and contribution to high school sports Tom was elected to represent Southeastern NC on the NCAA Board of Directors for four years. The Fayetteville Sports Club inducted him into the Fayetteville Sports Club Hall of Fame on February 26, 2007. Pine Forest High School celebrated Tom's coaching career on January 7, 2014 with a ceremony attended by former players, staff members, friends and family naming the gym as "Thomas Jackson Gymnasium". His service, loyalty and dedication to the young men and women that participated on teams coached by "Coach Jackson" over a 47 year career will always be etched in their memory as guiding principles for life's choices. The family will receive friends Friday, May 9 from 12:30-2:00 PM at the Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. Funeral will begin at 2:00 PM in the Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.
