FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Army Maj. Max Herbert Mitchell Sr., 81, of Fayetteville, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, in Womack Army Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel in Fayetteville with the Rev. Phil Williams and the Rev. Frank Scott. Burial in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with military honor.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the Vietnam War; a retired helicopter pilot and pilot instructor; and dual qualified helicopter-fixed wing. He was a commercial entrepreneur and he developed Breezewood Plaza Shopping Center.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Williams Mitchell of the home; son, Max Mitchell Jr. and wife Kendra of Huntsville, Ala.; daughter, Vicki Cole and husband Richard of Puerto Escondido, Mexico; stepsons, Felix Hernandez of San Mateo, Calif., and Luis Hernandez of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Max Mitchell III, Spencer Mitchell and LeAnn Hernandez.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill Mitchell and Lewis Mitchell; and sister, Warwick Garfield.
