FAYETTEVILLE Herbert Michael "Smitty" Smith, 63, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, March 18, 2017.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 11 am in Gardner's United Methodist Church with Revs. Herbert Lowry and Eldrick Davis presiding. The burial will follow at LaFayette Memorial Park.

Smitty was retired from the Fayetteville Fire Department and was an active member of Gardner's UMC. He served as the head usher and was affectionately known as the 'Candy Man' for always providing sweets for the children's church or whoever needed it.

He is survived by his sister, Linda Gail Scott and her husband Harvey Scott, Sr. of Fayetteville; 3 nephews, Kenneth Rae Carpenter and wife Ronda of Brockway, PA, Harvey Scott, Jr. and wife Lindsey of Fayetteville, and Jonathan Keith Scott and wife Leah of Fayetteville; and 5 great-nieces and nephews, Sadie Rose Carpenter, Logan Carpenter, Addyson Faith Scott, Luke Keith Scott and Lane Darden Scott.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 am at Gardner's UMC on Tuesday morning.
