FAYETTEVILLE - Herman L. Bishop, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009, after a brief illness. Mr. Bishop was born in Sampson County on Aug. 31, 1920. He was educated in Fayetteville city schools. He served in the United States Postal Service for 35 years, was a veteran of World War II and served in the European Theater for 3 years with the rank of sergeant. He was the last living member of the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department and served as chairman of the fireman's relief fund. Herman served 10 years on the city of Fayetteville School Board. He was the past commander and chairman of the trustees of the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry, in which he served for 70 years. Herman was also a member of the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club. He was a lifetime deacon and past moderator at First Baptist Church of Fayetteville. Also, he was a lifetime Mason and past chairman of the Cumberland County Shrine Club Crippled Children's Committee as member of Sudan Temple. He served as first vice commander of the Centennial Legion of Historic Military Command. Herman served as a city of Fayetteville police officer and a Cumberland County deputy sheriff. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Vivian Burnette Bishop; son, Chip Bishop and wife Beckie Bishop; daughter, Brenda Bullock; and granddaughters, Jenna and Megan Bishop and Kristen Bullock. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 19, 2009, at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church with the Rev. A. Edward Beddingfield Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Cross Creek Cemetery.
