Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE- Hershell Grey Barbour, 82, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2012, at the Carroll S. Roberson Hospice Center. He was born April 25, 1929 in Erwin, N.C. to the late Frederick Angier Barbour and Elizabeth Morris Barbour. Hershell grew up in Dunn, N.C. and graduated from Dunn High School in 1947 where he was a multi-sport athlete and active in many other school activities. He was an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow recipient. After high school, he attended Campbell College, majoring in political science and economics, before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Hershell served in the USAF from 1948 – 1952, including service in Japan and active combat in Korea, where he received many commendations and campaign ribbons. He was assigned to the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) and served as supervisor of intelligence reports. After his military service, Hershell returned to Dunn where he married his wife of 55 years, Shirley Ann Ennis. Together, they moved to Fayetteville and raised their four children. He was active at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served on numerous committees. Hershell was employed in broadcasting and was General Manager of WFLB for many years. Active in the business community, he served as president of the Exchange Club and chairman of the Heart Fund and St. Jude's Hospital Fund. He later served with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department as Public Relations Officer and Detective for 20 years, retiring in 2000. In addition, Hershell was an instructor in the Criminal Justice Program at Fayetteville Technical Community College. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ennis Barbour; daughter, Ellen Price and husband Robert of Huntersville; daughter, Beth Williams and husband Gene of Clayton; son, Michael Barbour and wife Kathy of Fayetteville; son, Steven Barbour and wife Dani of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Gene Williams, III, Lauren Williams, Kristin Williams, Evan Barbour, David Price, Anna Grey Barbour, Jared Barbour, Aiden Barbour, and Spencer Barbour; sister, Jennie Brooks and husband, Clyde of Greenville; and many beloved nieces and nephews and their spouses. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frederick Morris Barbour and Carroll Corbett Barbour; and sister, Fay Barbour Tew. The family will receive friends Friday, February 24, 2012 at 12:00 in the Gathering Hall of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in Fayetteville. The service will follow at 1pm in the sanctuary, officiated by Reverend John J. Cook III. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn following the service. Memorials may be made to Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Westmont Drive, Fayetteville, N.C. 28305. Greenwood Cemetery is located at the corner of South McKay Avenue and Susan Tart Road in Dunn.
