Obituary

Brinkley, Holland L. FAYETTEVILLE - Holland Lee Brinkley, 92, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Davidson County on Aug. 7, 1916, to Charles Dusenberry Brinkley and Carrie Koontz Brinkley. He graduated from High Point College and received a master's degree from the University of North Carolina. Mr. Brinkley was a retired teacher, coach and principal. \\"Poppy,\\" as he was sometimes called, will be remembered by many friends, young and old, for his great sense of humor, love of life and endless generosity. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, in 1997; two sisters, Sula and Arline; and three brothers, Carl, Wade and Paul Brinkley. He is survived by two daughters, Judy Brinkley Knowles of Fayetteville, and Gay Brinkley Miriello of Raleigh; sister, Mary Zimmerman of Lexington; and a granddaughter, Niki Knowles of Wilmington. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. The funeral service will follow at 2p.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Ham officiating. Entombment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum on Ramsey Street. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
