Hortencia "Nana" Rubio Acosta, 83, was surrounded by her family as she passed away peacefully September 1, 2015 at her home of 50 years in Fayetteville, NC.
Hortencia, better known as Helen or Nana, was born on July 28, 1932 in East Los Angeles, CA. Nana and her husband set a true portrayal of what family should be. She dedicated her life to her husband of 33 years before his death in 1984 and continued to be the center of her family until she joined her true love again. She leaves behind a devoted family that will continue to follow in her footsteps. She is preceded in death by her husband Command Sergeant Major Jose Carpio Acosta and other loved ones.
Helen "Nana" is survived by three brothers, Ralph, Rudy and Edward Rubio and two sisters, Ofelia Leon and Margie Ayala, all of East Los Angeles, CA. She leaves behind two sons, four daughters and their significant others, Joe Acosta, Robert Acosta and Hilda Van Buren, Yolanda Anderson and Basil Bolton, Tencha Acosta, Delores and Ed Stern, Barbara and Allen Elmore. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren and their significant others, Leila and Anthony, Marie and JL, Tina and Dan, Marinda and Michael, Christopher and Gina, Jonathan, Edward, Christina and John, Casey and Rex, Patty, Boris and Denise, Elena and Jeremiah, Jenifer, Arthur and Rebecca, Martika and Corey, Blair, William and Cassidy and Nana joins her youngest grandson, Kyle (1993-2000). Her family was completed by her 19 great grandchildren, Justin, Brianna, Lindsay, Morgan, Victoria, Jessi, Jose, Kyleigh, Jaelyn, Matthew, Sienna, Dalton, Adam, Jaeda, Bret, Hudson, Asher, Jaesten, and Coral Rae.
The family will receive friends and visitors at Jernigan Warren Funeral home located at 545 Ramsey St. Fayetteville, NC 28301 on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
A Service will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church located at 1000 Andrews Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28311 on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 9:30 am immediately followed by a burial service at Old Fort Bragg Cemetery located off Randolph Rd.
The family asks in lieu of flowers to please make donations to support Helen's daughter Tencha in her own fight with cancer. You may donate by going to

All remaining proceeds upon conclusion of Tencha's treatments will be donated to UNC Chapel Hill Cancer Center on behalf of Hortencia, Tencha and the Acosta family.
