HubertE. " Cotton" McDonald, Sr., 85 ofFayetteville went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, October 8, 2014in his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born December 24, 1928.Hubert was predeceased by his parents Mr. and Mrs. C.D. McDonald and hisbrother Gene McDonald.
His family moved from Dunn, N.C. in 1939 to Fayetteville.He graduated from Fayetteville High School. As a member of the high schooltrack team, he became known as the "fastest man in town" during the late1940's. Hubert served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army for two years during theKorean Conflict. He returned to the family business, 301 Truck Stop, after hismilitary service. He had begun working there during his teen years. To many hewas known by his nickname "Cotton". For several years he and his son Ellisoperated the 301 Truck Stop Restaurant. Folks still talk about his "fatback".He retired with over 50 years in the family business. In 1998, he retired andhe and his wife moved to Ocean Isle Beach. They returned in 2001 with theirlittle Maltese dog, "Ginger". She has been Hubert's constant shadow since shejoined the family until October 2011. By January 2012 Hubert had a new shadowLace, another maltese that has proven to be a devoted companion too.
Since2003, Hubert has been an active member of Village Baptist Church. He loved hischurch family and his Sunday School Class. Over the past few years several ofthe men have met for lunch nearly every Monday. This time of fellowship hasbeen a great source of fun and laughter for everyone that attended.
Funeralservices will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. inJernigan-Warren Chapel with the Dr. C. J. Bordeaux and Dr. Phil Spears,officiating. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey St. Thefamily will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, October 13,2014 from12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
He is survived by his wife Cathy Wells McDonald; sonEllis McDonald and wife Bettina; daughters, Harriett McDonald, Debra Waters and husband Gene and grandsonEric Waters; sister-in-law Frances B. McDonald; nephews Clay and Wade McDonaldand their children; sister-in-law Judy Wells Hairr and brother-in-law KennethHairr and nephew, Evan Hairr. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made toStedman Baptist Church 7342 Clinton Rd. Stedman, N.C. 28391 or SalemburgBaptist Church 300 N. Main St. Salemburg, N.C. 28385.
