Obituary

J. Warren Elkins FAYETTEVILLE - Devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather J. Warren Elkins passed away unexpectedly May 25, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Susan Elkins; and their three children, Matthew Elkins; Geoffrey Elkins, wife Michelle and their children, Hunter and Jackson; and Christine Shaffer, husband Russell and their children, Christian and Hannah Rae. He is also survived by his two younger brothers, Harold Elkins and Ron Elkins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Wilbert and Vara Elkins. Warren was a Fayetteville native and graduated from Fayetteville High School class of 1955. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1960 with a degree in pharmacy. After college he worked for Fayetteville Drug for a short while. He joined the North Carolina National Guard and served for eight years. In January 1962, he began working for Squibb Pharmaceuticals Co. as a sales representative in the Salisbury region. He worked as a partner, then owned Massey Hill Drug Co. for many years. He was also a volunteer pharmacist for The CARE Clinic from the time the clinic opened. More recently, he worked for retail chains and most recently for Rite Aid. Warren received the Paragon Award for Pharmacist of the Year in 2000. Warren was a pharmacist for 52 years and loved his work. In addition to The CARE Clinic, Warren was very active in the community. He was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron for 22 years, volunteered with the Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch, and worked with the Carpentry Ministry at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church where he was a member of the Lighthouse class. He was a former member of the Fayetteville Jaycees and the Salisbury Jaycees, as well as the Sierra Club. Warren also held a private pilot license and was a member of a local flying club for 20 years. Warren met the love of his life in March 1962. Susan and Warren were happily married for 48 years. In those 48 years they fostered an atmosphere of love and impressed the importance of family. Warren was grandfather to four adorable grandchildren he loved very much. He was an amazing grandfather and would do anything for anyone in his family, especially his precious grandchildren. Warren enjoyed spending time with his family at the beach, going to any UNC-Chapel Hill sporting event and playing with his grandchildren. Warren was an extraordinary, one of a kind person. He will be missed desperately. The visitation will be from 6pm to 8pm Monday, May 28, 2012, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2012, in Snyder Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. John Cook will officiate the funeral, assisted by the Rev. Robbie Byrd. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. The pallbearers will be Warren Elkins' nephews: Jonathan Clark, Norman Clark, Lee Combs, Ray Combs, Lee Elkins and Robert Hunter, with Dale Hunter as honorary pall bearer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The CARE Clinic of Fayetteville or to missions at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2012 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
