Retired U.S. Army Master Sgt. Jackie McArthur Thornton, 67, of Hope Mills, passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Jackie was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and Special Forces for 21 years. He served three tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Winnie and McKenley Thornton.

Graveside services will be held at noon Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

He is survived by his daughters, Heather Ryder of Aberdeen, Kay Howery and husband, Michael, of Pinehurst and Serena Gonzalez and husband, Juan, of Carthage; sisters, Linda Fountain and husband, Chuck, of Fayetteville and Kathy Williford and husband, Charlie, of Dunn; brother, Leonard Thornton and wife, Lois, of South Mills; and grandchildren, Anna Ryder, Mason Ryder, Payton Ryder, Johnatan Gonzalez, Gabriel Gonzalez, Sierra Gonzalez, Christian Gonzalez, Makayla Howery, Caroline Howery and Ethan Howery.
