James A. Adkins, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

James was born in Cumberland County on May 18, 1935. He was the last of the nine children born to the late Arthor Thomas Adkins and Mamie Barefoot Adkins.

James was a graduate of 71st High School and a U.S. Navy veteran where he was a part of the Seabees. He retired from Independent Lift Truck Service where he was the owner and operator.

After retirement, he joined his wife with her business, House of Quilting, where the two travelled many miles together marketing her patented Quilting Thimble. In his later years, you could find James in his garden tending to his vegetables or sitting on his back porch enjoying conversation with his family and friends.

The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, June 8, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Chapel.  A burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park.

In addition to his parents and siblings, James was preceded in death by his grandson, Cory Joel Adkins and his great-grandson, Timothy Caiden Howell.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 68 years, Jean Adkins; children, Jeanne Adkins Howell and husband Rev. Timothy Howell of Raleigh, James "Jimmy" Adkins of Fayetteville, Judy Adkins Cordova and husband Adam of Fruitvale, TX, Julie Adkins Busby and husband Robert of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Brandon Howell and wife Amanda, Jennifer Needham and husband Joshua, April Pratt, Ashlyn Rubio and husband Kevin; great grandchildren, Lily, Xander, and Liam Howell, Abby and Evie Needham.
