FAYETTEVILLE - Retired US Army SFC James E. Johnson, 86, of Fayetteville, died Sunday, May 21, 2017.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 1 pm in Peace Presbyterian Church with Rev. Archie Barringer presiding. The burial will follow at LaFayette Memorial Park with military honors.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 am to 1 pm at the church.

James retired from the US Army after 21 years including service in the Vietnam War. He was also retired from Maxwell Furniture and just had completed 30 years with H&R Block.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Cayton Johnson; two sisters, Dorothy Giddings and Ruby Wallace; and a brother, Jack Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Melva Johnson; 3 sons, Frank Johnson and wife Carol of Fayetteville, Brett Johnson and wife Tonya of Fayetteville, and Syd Johnson and wife Paula of West End; 3 grandchildren, Sarah Carter and husband Josh, Nicholas Johnson and Isaac Johnson; one great-grandchild, Christopher Carter; 5 sisters, Catherine Jones, Hattie Murray, Mattie Cavenaugh, Frances Hall and Lois Mobley; and best friend, Harvey Knowles.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Peace Presbyterian Church or to a charity of one's choice.
