FAYETTEVILLE - James Edward McCarthy Sr., 83, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, in the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Mr. McCarthy was a veteran of World War II and a prisoner of war. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, a retired dental consultant, former town commissioner in Vernon, Conn., founding father of the YMCA in Vernon and played trombone with big band music in Vernon and Port Richey, Fla.
Memorial services will be held today, Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel in Fayetteville with the Rev. Gerry Davis officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Mr. McCarthy is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Doris \\"Dottie\\" Lowe McCarthy of the home; daughters, Deborah M. Pevler and husband Michael of Fayetteville, Linda M. Pittelli and husband Patrick of Los Angeles, and Marianne M. Friedman and husband Alan of Somers, Conn.; sons, James E. McCarthy Jr. of Vernon, David C. McCarthy of Vernon, and Richard L. McCarthy and wife Michaela of Harbor City, Calif.; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; sister, Ann Beard of Williamsburg, Va.; and brother, Robert Schlossberg of Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Augustus McCarthy.
