Obituary

James Robert "Bobby" Horne, 75, formerly of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, NC.

Bobby was born December 13, 1946, in Fayetteville, NC, to the late James Alfred Horne and Annie Mae Meece Horne. He was a 1966 graduate of Stedman High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment and served a tour of duty in Vietnam in December 1966.  He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant from the United States Marine Corps in 1969.  He returned to Fayetteville and while working at Piedmont Airlines, Grannis Field Airport, met his wife, Judy. They were married on February 7, 1971.

He joined the Fayetteville Police Department as a Patrol Officer in 1974. He then went to Traffic Enforcement as an Accident/Hit & Run Investigator. Bobby then was a motorcycle officer.  Later he was transferred to the Interagency Auto Theft Unit. Returned to Patrol Division and was promoted to Sergeant in 1993. He then transferred to the Narcotic/Vice Task Force. In 1994, Bobby was assigned to the Patrol Support Division/Neighborhood Foot Patrol, known now as the Housing Authority Neighborhood Improvement Team, Mobil-One & Two, Bike Patrol, Reserve Officer Programs and Code Enforcement. He served as Vice-president of Eastern NC Housing Authority and Liaison to Special Operations at Fort Bragg, City Improvement Team and You (CITY) and a member on the Wrecker Review Board.

Bobby retired as a Senior Sergeant from the Fayetteville Police Department in 2002. A few years later, he worked as Civil Security Guard for USASOC, United States Army at Fort Bragg.  After his retirement from USASOC, Bobby continued to be very active with his civic groups, Cape Fear Valley Scottish Clan. Bobby served as sergeant and later commissioned a Captain for the Quartermaster section with the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry (FILI).

Bobby is survived by his wife Judy J. Horne, of Carolina Shores, NC; sons, James Stuart Horne  (Leslie) of Durham, NH, Michael Sean Horne of Carolina Shores, NC;  brother, Donnie W. Horne (Terri), of Hope Mills, NC; grandchildren, James Keegan Horne, Gavin Elliott Horne, and Arwen Elise Horne of Durham, NH; niece, nephew and cousins.  He is predeceased by a brother, Tommy A. Horne.

A Memorial will be held Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 3:00 PM, at the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry Armory, 210 Burgess Street, Fayetteville, NC with the Rev. Robert M. Alves and Chaplin Douglas Stephens III, officiating.
