Retired Sergeant Major James E. Shaffer, 87, passed away September 7, 2014, in his home. James was born in Mississippi on February 23, 1927. He retired from the US Army after serving more than 30 years, most of it in Japan, Korea, Okinawa, and Vietnam. During his career in the military, he served as a Parachute Rigger, Aerial Delivery Technician, and First Sergeant of several units. Key assignments were in the 549th QM Company, the 82nd Airborne Division, 173rd Abn Bde and the US Army ACE Board, receiving many awards and decorations. After retirement from the Army, he managed the Hardees on Yadkin Road for over 16 years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 plus years, Yasuko Shaffer, and his loving daughter, June Shaffer. He is survived by his sister of the home, Bobbie Shaffer.
