James H. Wilson Jr.
FAYETTEVILLE - James Harley Wilson Jr., of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, in his home. He was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Swain County to James Harley and Lula Mae Wilson. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jennings, Gene and Robert. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Rachel Evans Wilson; and children, James H. Wilson III and wife Kim of Fayetteville, Susan Wilson Snider and husband Larry of Wrightsville Beach and John R. Wilson of Fayetteville. He is also survived by his sister, Eulene Gray (Bob) of Weaverville. He also leaves four grandchildren, Elizabeth Wilson, Stuart Wilson, Rachel Snider and Robinson Snider; a niece, Karen Sorrells; and two nephews, Robert Gray and Darrell Gray. Mr. Wilson was owner and president of Rankin Brothers Co. in Fayetteville and Formply Products of South Boston, Va., since 1968. He came to Fayetteville in 1948 to work with Henry Rankin of the company. He married Rachel Evans of Murfreesboro in 1954. Mr. Wilson served on many boards and in civic organizations, including BB&T, Fayetteville Academy, Haymount United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army and the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. He was a member of Fayetteville Kiwanis Club, Highland Country Club and Cape Fear Aero Club. He was a member of Haymount United Methodist Church for many years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Wilson was a lifelong aviation enthusiast. He had his private pilot's license for more than 60 years and enjoyed great relationships with the Fayetteville flying community. His other passion was fishing He traveled to Alaska, Florida and Belize to fish, but for many years could be found on the beach at Bald Head Island, where he had much success surf fishing. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at Haymount United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Woody Wells officiating. Visitation with the family will be in the commons room at the church from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in Cross Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville NC 28303, or the Salvation Army, 220 E. Russell St., Fayetteville NC 28301. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
