SANFORD — Janet King Burney, 55, of Sanford, known by all as "Susie," died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill due to a massive stroke.
Susie was a resident of Sanford and a former resident of Fayettteville. She was a member of White Oak Baptist Church and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother and faithful friend. Susie had a heart to serve others and this was especially evident as she lovingly cared for her in-laws, Rufus A. Burney Sr. and Blannie Ruth Carter Burney, in their final days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Margaret King; her stepdaughter, Tyra Burney Cifreo; and her grandson, Robert Elliott Burney.
She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Rufus A. "Andy" Burney Jr.; her son, Travis Hair; her daughter, Olivia Hair; her stepdaughters, Myra Burney Jarvis and Michelle Burney Sparks; her grandchildren, Blake Hair, Alexandria Revier, Matthew Owens, Gregory Griffin, Dallas Deskins, John Kaleb Jarvis, Steven Jarvis, Jake Sparks, Jonathan Sparks, Jared Sparks and Jessica Sparks; and her great-grandchildren, Aiden and Marley Deskins.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday July 29, 2013, in the chapel of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville, with the Rev. Michelle Burney Sparks officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.
