Obituary

Janice Elaine Peele, 71, of Spring Lake, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2022, only days after learning she had cancer.

Born July 28, 1951, to the late Shaw Waylon Dallas, Sr., and Virginia Belle Dallas (McLaurin), Janice grew up in Massey Hill across Cumberland Road from their venerable Dallas Supermarket. She treasured her sense of community formed during those early years. She graduated from Massey Hill High School in 1969 and remained close to home to complete her degree at Methodist University in 1973.

She spent 29 years of her life in service to her students as a teacher in Cumberland County Schools. Mrs. Peele particularly had a heart for those with discipline issues, and she took pride in helping them find their way.

Early in her career she fell in love with the new music teacher at Howard Elementary and they wed in 1979. Together they created a loving home in Hope Mills, where Janice soon devoted her whole heart to motherhood, welcoming two boys born in 1981 and 1985 respectively. She tirelessly supported her husband and sons in their every endeavor through her final days. Outside her work and home, she was an active member of Camp Ground United Methodist Church.

Janice leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 43 years, Maurice Lambert Peele, Jr., of the home; son Jonathan Maurice Peele of Charlotte, NC; son Christopher Shaw Peele and his partner Marie Elizabeth Logue of New Hill, NC; and many dear extended family members and friends. Her parents and her brother, Shaw Waylon Dallas, Jr., preceded her in death.

On Sunday from 2:00-5:00 PM her husband and children will receive family and friends at the home. All those who loved her are invited to celebrate her life on Monday, December 19, 2022 at Camp Ground United Methodist Church, 4625 Campground Road, Fayetteville, N.C., 28314. Visitation will take place at 11:30 AM followed by a service at 12:30 PM. Afterwards, her church family invites attendees to remain for a luncheon and fellowship.
