Obituary

Ms. Jean T. Porter, of Fayetteville, was born Sept. 29, 1944, in Murphy. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her children and closest friends. A devout Roman Catholic, Ms. Porter was president of Saint Patrick Catholic Church Sodality. A registered nurse, she received her education from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, where she was the second African-American student to successfully complete the university's RN curriculum. Her skill and love of patient care led her to use her talent as a critical care nurse, initially working at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. She later moved to Fayetteville, working at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in the same capacity before moving into nursing administration serving as a nursing supervisor for both Cape Fear Valley and Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital. In 1983, she left the country to live and work abroad as a nursing supervisor at King Abulldazz Hospital, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She retired from Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital in 1998. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Edna Thomas. She is survived by her three children, Charles Chavis of Las Vegas, Jennifer Cruickshank of Raleigh, and Jane Johnson of Fayetteville. Jean was \\"Nanny\\" to her granddaughter Taylour Johnson, and \\"Grandma\\" to her grandson Corey Locklear Chavis. Jean is also survived by her identical twin sister, Ms. Jane Williams of Phoenix. The two shared a special bond, supporting one another throughout their lives. They shared a love of nursing with Jane also becoming a registered nurse and graduate of the Gardner-Webb University RN nursing program. A visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 tonight, Friday, March 4, 2011, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral, 545 Ramsey St. in Fayetteville. A celebration of her life with a memorial Mass at Saint Patrick Catholic Church will take place on Saturday March 5, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. Join family and friends for a fellowship luncheon immediately following the service, Saint Patrick Catholic Church, 2844 Village Drive, Fayetteville. The family would like to send their most sincere thanks and appreciation to Cape Fear Valley-SICU nursing staff, Manny, Katie, and Amy for their kind and professional care.
