Obituary

Jerry W. McCall STEDMAN — Jerry Westbrook McCall was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Stedman. Mr. McCall passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. Mr. McCall graduated from Stedman High School in 1938. After school, he went to work as a carpenter's helper. He remained in the construction trade in some capacity for the rest of his career. Like many young men of the time, McCall joined the military after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He became a chief petty officer in the Navy Seabees (Construction Batallion). His battalion helped build the runway facilities on Tinian Island from which the USA's atomic bomb missions were launched against Japan. After the war, McCall returned home to continue in the building trade, eventually owning his own business, MECCO Construction Co., in 1959. Jerry McCall was a lifetime member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Stedman, member of Stedman Masonic Lodge No. 730, a Shriner, served on the Cape Fear Valley Hospital Board of Trustees from 1977-81, and served several years on the Fayetteville Area Health Education Center Board of Trustees. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, in Cokesbury United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Koo officiating. The burial will follow in the McCall family cemetery with Masonic rites. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 2 to 3 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall at Cokesbury UMC. Mr. McCall was preceded in death by his parents, George N. and Cleta Blake McCall of Stedman; brothers, Rudolph and Trenton McCall; sister, Margaret McCall Whitmer; his first wife, Clarice Foushee McCall; and his second wife, Agnes Horne Blake McCall. He is survived by a daughter, Donna McCall Bullard and husband L.C. of Fayetteville; sons, Philip N. McCall and wife Sue of Eastover, and Jerry W. McCall Jr. and wife Anita of Stedman; grandchildren, Alison McCall Lassiter and husband Robert and Andrew McCall, all of Stedman; two great-grandchildren, Jeron and Evita Lassiter; stepdaughter, Kay Blake Bullard and husband Ray and stepson, Vic Blake and wife Teresa, all of Stedman; four stepgrandchildren; five great-stepgrandchildren; and beloved caregivers, Patsy Hairr and Patricia Hedrick.Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, in Cokesbury United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Koo officiating. The burial will follow in the McCall family cemetery with Masonic rites. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 2 to 3 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall at Cokesbury UMC.
