Obituary

Jesse (Jim) M. Lamm, Jr. AKA John Braxton, 73, of Fayetteville, NC, switched stations Sunday, March 29, 2026. For over 30 years, radio/television talent John Braxton's voice floated on the airwaves of local and national stations: it hung in the air as people shopped, went to work, fell in love, and chased their dreams as he fulfilled his. From age 11, listening to WLS-Chicago, his dream was to lighten the day of his listeners. His on- and off-air work at WFLB and WKFT Channel 40 as well as several other stations in N.C. and at WSGN RadioAlabama demonstrates his immense talent, which he continued in later years as owner of Professional Videomakers, filming local sports and dance events, preserving moments for families and earning his cherished position in the Fayetteville Media Mafia. Through his work he touched many lives, volunteering in the community, but his legacy is found in the youth with whom he worked as French teacher at Hoke County High School and as indispensable assistant to Terry Sanford High School's theatre department.

His hobbies revolved around listening to music. His pitch-perfect ear and impeccable timing made him an excellent guitarist, pianist, and editor. Winner of many accolades, his favorite was being Number 1 DJ in the Fayetteville media-markets four years running because his award each time was to ride the lead elephant in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus's parade when it came to town.

He is survived by his wife, Laura and his daughter, Jessica; his sister, Helen Cheek, and brother-in-law, Jimmy Cheek of Durham; his niece, Sara Houston and family of Hillsborough; and his nephew, Michael Griffin and family of Durham. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Jesse M. Lamm, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Lewis Lamm of Lumberton.

A celebration of his life will be held. Details and contact will be announced.
