Retired Sgt. 1st Class Jessie Leroy Johnson, 75, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Veterans Affairs Administration Medical Center in Durham, surrounded by his family after a brief illness.
Mr. Johnson originally was from Harrellsville, and was an Army veteran with 23 years of service. His service included two tours of duty on the Korean peninsula, one tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam and one tour in Germany. After retirement from the United States Army, Mr. Johnson worked in housekeeping and served as past commander of the Fayetteville Chapter 46 of the Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Hildegard Johnson of Fayetteville; and five sons, Freddy Johnson Sr. and wife Clarkie, Jessie L. Johnson Jr., Michael E. Johnson and wife Betty, Carey L. Johnson and wife Delia and Thurman Johnson, all of Fayetteville. He is further survived by 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Parker, Fannie Mae Johnson and Tinnie Scott of Philadelphia, and Lillian Rivers and her husband Gene of Clayton, N.J.; two brothers, William Johnson Jr. of Ahoskie and Shelly Johnson of Fayetteville; as well as a host of aunts, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors will follow in Cumberland Memorial Gardens. There will be a public viewing from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at the funeral home.
