Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Jewell Faircloth Ake, 88, of the Cedar Creek community in Fayetteville, died of natural causes at 2:45 a.m. Sunday, March 27, 2011, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Born in Cumberland County, she was the daughter of the late John Love and Lucy Clark Faircloth. She was the widow of George Simpson Ake Sr. Jewell graduated from Stedman High School. A tax accountant and bookkeeper since 1960, she had her office in her home. She was active in the Rural Letter Carriers' Auxiliary for many years, serving as a state officer for 10 years, a national officer for five years and as national president of the NRLCA auxilliary in 1982 at the convention in Rapid City, S.D. She received the Outstanding Auxiliary Member of the Year award and was awarded honorary citizen of many states. She attended at least 21 national conventions and served two years as parliamentarian at the national conventions of the Rural Letter Carriers' Auxiliary. During her life, she was active in her church (Cedar Creek Baptist), serving many years as youth choir director, assistant church music director, junior department teacher and superintendent. She served on committees, and was church clerk for 17 years. She also was a member of the Eastern Star. Surviving are three children, Wayne Ake and wife Karen of Stanly County, George S. Ake Jr. and wife Ann of Raleigh and Phyllis Jewell Ake of Durham; two grandchildren George S. Ake III (Tripp) and wife Renee of Raleigh and Skyler Madison-Grey Ake of Stanly County; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Grace Ake. The family will receive visitors at Cedar Creek Baptist Church from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at church by the Rev. John Peverett. The funeral will be directed by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville. Memorials my be made to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.
