Obituary

Joan Shaffer "Jo" Daniel, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed into her heavenly Father's arms on Sunday, June 30, 2013. Jo was born on December 4, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Carrie Shaffer of DuBois, Pennsylvania. Jo attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduated with a BS in Nursing and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Army. She adored children, served as a pediatric nurse and loved taking care of newborn infants in the Army hospital nursery. While in the Army, Jo met and married Dr. C.T. Daniel who was completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. They soon were assigned to the Army hospital in Frankfurt Germany. Three of their four children were born in Frankfurt and they traveled extensively throughout Europe while they were there. The young family moved to Fayetteville where Jo enjoyed her role as wife and mother and she excelled in it. She created a loving and happy home for her family. She was a loving and supportive wife. She nurtured her children, taught them and set a wonderful life example for them. Her family will always remember the wonderful holiday traditions she maintained over many years; always celebrated with tremendous amounts love, joy, games, wonderful decorations and everyone's favorite food. Her children and grandchildren will always appreciate the shelter of her kind and nurturing spirit. She was a woman of strong faith and tireless servant in her church, Haymount United Methodist. She served her church in a wide variety of roles including the President of United Methodist Women for three terms. She served her community as President of the Cumberland County Medical Auxiliary & Blood Assurance Plan, was active in the Junior League and volunteered in United Way and Cancer Fundraising. Jo was fun- loving and a wonderful friend. She enjoyed golf, was an excellent bridge player, enjoyed gardening with The Lafayette Garden Club and enjoyed reading with her friends in The Literary Club. Jo was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Dr. C.T. Daniel and her beloved daughter Patricia Daniel Vickery, her brother Harry and her sisters Nane and Valma. She is survived by her children: Dr. Richard Shaffer Daniel and wife Libby of Fayetteville, Jacqueline Parham Daniel of Hollywood, Florida., Joan Turner Daniel of Clyde Park, Montana; grandchildren: Carrie Freeman Vickery and husband Phillip Skipper of Winston Salem, NC; Lieutenant Ray Daniel Vickery and wife Candace and great granddaughter Anna Jane Vickery of Eagle River, Alaska and sister Phylis Shaffer Swift of DuBois, Pennsylvania. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 2:00pm at Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Ft. Bragg Rd., Fayetteville with visitation following the service in the Commons Room. Memorial donations are requested in lieu of flowers to Haymount United Methodist Church. The family extends its sincere appreciation to the staff and congregation of Haymount United Methodist Church, the entire staff at The Carolina Inn, Home Instead Senior Care and Liberty Home Care & Hospice Services. Memorial service will held on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Haymount United Methodist Church. The burial will be private. The family will receive friends following the service in the commons room at the church.
