John David Garner, 84, entered into the kingdom of heaven on Friday, November 8, 2013.
When he was born, he was given the name of JD Garner. When entering into the Air Force, he was told that he needed a first and middle name and he became John David. Most of his family continued to call him JD and his friends knew him as John.
Throughout his life, his love for the Motion Picture Industry was obvious.
After entering into the Air Force, he was stationed in Guam in the late 40's. He was a diesel mechanic and used a bulldozer to clear the land that was to be used to build a movie theatre for the troops. His part time job required him to walk 3 miles each way to operate the projectors for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). With the few dollars that he would make each night, he would deposit the money into his First Citizens Bank account. When he returned to the states, he was able to purchase a vehicle.
His passion for the movies continued back at home. After concluding his service in the military, he began working for many of the Drive-in theatres in the Fayetteville area. Some of his most memorable times were managing the Midway Drive-in on Bragg Blvd. He dedicated 27 years to this location, before becoming a Division Manager for Consolidated Theatres. He spent 50+ years in the movie industry.
After retirement, there were very few days that went by that he did not talk about the movies. Just days before his passing, while his son was visiting him in the hospital, John asked "Did you enjoy the movie?" and then he fell back to sleep.
John's spiritual life was very comforting. He loved the old time gospel music. This style of music made the grandchildren question where did that come from. This would just cause us all to smile.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Chadwick Garner and siblings George Garner, Ada Bowen, Junior Garner and Frances Johnson.
He is survived by his sister Gertrude Averitte; sons John David Garner Jr., wife Brenda, and David Adamski; daughters Lynn Rowley, husband Christopher, and Elizabeth Pohl, husband Ryan. He is also survived by grandchildren: Jessica, Tyler, Alex, Michael, Beth, Briana, Hunter, Cody, Jennifer, Carl and Sharilyn and two great-grandchildren.
