Obituary

Col. John C. "Johnny" Linley, Jr. U.S. Army (Ret) passed away Friday June 6, 2014 in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC He was born December 10, 1943, in Winfield Alabama, and married Carol Schaefer on March 1st, 1968. John is preceded in death by his father, LTC (Ret.) John C. Linley, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Carol, two sisters, Janet Robinson of Stockbridge, GA & Diane Hendrix of Canton, GA his mother Opaline Cagle Linley of McDonough, GA and a nephew Alex Greger of Buenos Aires, Argentina and a niece Theresa Doukov of Marietta, GA. He attended the Citadel, class of 1965. Retired from the Army on January 31st 1993 at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. The family will receive friends at Jernigan-Warren funeral home on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. The funeral will follow in the funeral home chapel at 10:30 am and the burial will follow in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with military honors. He had an illustrious career in the Army during which he received many awards including the Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze Stars , Purple Heart (Vietnam) Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Commendation Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Service Stars, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Galantry Cross with Palm, Southwest Asia Service Medal with one Bronze Star, Expert Marksmanship Badge (Rifle M-16) Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist badge, Air Assualt Badge, Overseas Service Bar, Block 14 German Language, Command & General Staff College, Air Assualt 1982, NATO Defense College Rome 1988, Army War College 1989. Of all the many accomplishments, John was most Proud of Being Airborne. Even with all the accomplishments, John remained a humble man. John's family is so proud of all of the things he did in his life & career in addition to being a loving husband, son, brother & uncle.
