Obituary

John Burton Kilpatrick, Jr. (J. B.) of Fayetteville, died on Friday, September 10, 2010 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with Dr. John Peverett and Ken Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 3:00-5:00 pm at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home on Ramsey Street. Mr Kilpatrick was a native of Duplin County, born to John Burton Kilpatrick, Sr. and Dolly Teachey Kilpatrick of Teachey, NC. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Dorothy K. Petersen. Mr. Kilpatrick is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mildred Fort Kilpatrick, a son and his wife, John Burton Kilpatrick, 111 (Burt) and Kristen Grady Kilpatrick, and three grandchildren, Tyler Burton Kilpatrick, Anna Cate Kilpatrick and Lucas Christian Kilpatrick, all of Wilmington, N.C. Also surviving are a sister, Lois K. Cooper of Wilmington and brothers, Stanley Kilpatrick of Wilmington and Graham Kilpatrick and wife, Shelby of Wallace. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews on both the Kilpatrick and the Fort side of the family. Mr. Kilpatrick was a Navy veteran, having joined at the age of 17. Upon completing his service, he enrolled in Guilford College and graduated with honors with a BS degree in History. In 1957 he became employed by Automatic Electric Co, a division of General Telephone Co., which is now known as Alcatel-Lucent Technology. He began his training in Fayetteville and then was transferred to numerous states in his contract jobs for the company. In 1964 he was transferred back to Fayetteville as Installation Supervisor for a contract job with Carolina Telephone Co where he met his future wife, Mildred. They were married in 1967 and lived in several states before transferring back to Fayetteville in 1971. He retired in 1992 with 35 years of service. Mr. Kilpatrick was an active member of Teachey Baptist Church, Teachey, N.C., in his youth and later an active member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church. He was a very gentle, quiet man, who was dependable, patient and kind and will be missed by his family and all who knew him. Flowers or donations may be sent in memory of Mr. Kilpatrick to Cedar Creek Baptist Church.
