Obituary

John E. McCloskey FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Army Maj. John Edward McCloskey, 96, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, June 9, 2010. He was born April 28, 1914, to Bernard McCloskey and Marcella Gallager McCloskey of Philadelphia. He left the employment of Bethlehem Steel Corporation to enlist in the U.S. Army in February 1942 at the age of 28. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and served three tours in Korea. During his career he was a company commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. Jack was also among the first group of men enlisted in the newly formed Special Forces. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1962 as a major. After his military retirement Jack went to work in Fayetteville residential real estate, where he sold real estate, and performed VA appraisals until his retirement in 1988. Jack liked to fill his time with productive activity. He spent endless hours collecting, most recently cut crystal and glassware. He loved the sports of fishing and golf, whether he was watching or playing. He spent many years as a devoted fan of ASA horse shows. He read everyday, mostly his beloved history and current world events. He enjoyed a cocktail, a good meal and the company of his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Wilson McCloskey of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Connie McCloskey of Fayetteville, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Katie and Paul Pfeiffer of Florida, grandson, Michael McCloskey of the home; and four great-grandsons, Christian, Nathan and Kaden McCloskey and Benjamin Pfeiffer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, in the chapel of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park West on Raeford Road with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, June 11, 2010, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
