Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - John Cleland Reese, 104, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was born in Wilmington, Del., to Harry and Nellie Reese. He had two sisters, Leona Moore and Audey Smith, who preceded him in death. Cle, as his family and friends knew him, graduated from high school in Wilmington and on July 30, 1925, married his school time love, the late Beatrice \\"Bea\\" Z. Reese. The couple was blessed with the arrival of twin daughters, the late Beverly Ann Chadeayne and Barbara Jane Matthews, on April 4, 1927. That same year, Cle began work for the U.S. Postal Service, first as a clerk and a few years later he was commissioned as a postal inspector. Cle and his family moved to Ashland, Ky., with the postal service and a year later moved to Columbus, Ohio. He spent most of his service as a postal inspector in Columbus. During his career he was tasked by the USPS to specialize in investigations of criminal activity affecting the postal service. He developed a very good arrest-conviction record and at one point was assigned to temporary duty with a special task force of postal inspectors, FBI agents and police to investigate a large mail robbery in Boston. Cle retired in the late 1960s, and he and Bea moved to Fayetteville in 1985, where their son had taken up residence. Cle and Bea became active members of Camp Ground United Methodist Church. Additionally, they were enthusiastic flower gardeners until Bea's death in July 2008. In April of this year Cle broke his hip and following a short hospitalization at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center was transferred to Autumn Care Rehabilitation of Fayetteville. Cle's family expresses great appreciation to the caring staff at both Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and Autumn Care for the care he received at their hands. Additionally, the family expresses appreciation and great support from Pastor Haywood Smith and members of Camp Ground United Methodist Church. Cle is survived by his daughter, Barbara and husband John Matthews; son, Cleland P. \\"Cle\\" Reese and wife Aileen; grandchildren, Sherrie and Douglas Ray, Christy and Douglas Luckett, Cynthia and Wyman Warnock, Barbara and John Saunders, Dianna and Michael Zimmerman, Scott Reese, Robert and Robin Chadeayne, William and Lori Chadeayne, Donald and Mary Chadeayne, John and Cathy Matthews; great-grandchildren, Catherine Warnock, Ashley Reese, Amber Reese, Bobby Chadeayne, Brittany Chadeayne, Audrey Zimmerman, Garrett Ray, Adam Ray, Nicholas Chadeayne, Zachary Luckett, Tanner Luckett, Smith Weir, Eric Platt, Jed and Lori Warnock, John and Lindsey Matthews, Clay Matthews, Casey Warnock, and Andrew Chadeayne; great-great-grandchildren, Ansley Warnock, Hailey Warnock, Brandon Warnock, Aiden Weir, Noah Weir and Caleb Reese.
