John Alvie Sargent, 71, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023 at the VA Medical Center.
John was born June 2, 1952 in Flint, Michigan to the late Constance and John Sargent. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Kris and Kurt Sargent.
He retired from the Army in 1999 as acting Sergeant Major; with 9 of those years spent overseas in combat zones. John Was a Vietnam Combat Veteran serving 3 tours and a Desert Storm Veteran. His decorations included the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Army Air Medal. He was stationed at Fort Bragg where he planted roots and raised 3 sons. He was also stationed at Ft. Carson, Kuwait, Bosnia, Germany, Italy, and Ft. Hood to name a few. After retirement, he continued his working civil service at Ft. Hood until 2015. John also held VFW Post 3892 Vice Commander and Post Commander positions for multiple terms during this time.
He recently returned to Fayetteville, NC where he resided with his oldest son.
A Gathering of Friends will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, from 1-2:00 PM at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home with military honors following the visitation.
He is survived by his companion, Ruth Sapienza; sons, John Sargent (Tiffany), Brian Sargent, Randy Diola (Aisling); sister, Vickie Jewell; grandchildren, Landon Sargent, Hunter Sargent, Laycee Sargent, Aiden Sargent, Tyler Sargent, and Madison Diola.
