Obituary

Johnie Newton "Jack" Strickland, 83, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008, at home after a long illness. He attended services at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Fayetteville. Johnie Newton Strickland was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Kinston, Lenoir County, to the late William Perry Strickland and Mary Braswell Lamm Strickland. He was retired from the communications division of the civil service, with 30 years of service. Surviving are his beloved wife of 34 years, Etelvina Strickland; his only son, Ronald Newton Strickland; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Webb-Strickland of Fayetteville. He is also survived by three grandsons, Thomas J. Strickland of Fayetteville, and Ronald N. Strickland Jr. and Richard S. Strickland, both of Mississippi; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville with Chaplain Archie Barringer officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 220 E. Russell St., Fayetteville, NC 28301.
