Mr. Joseph E. Dyer, 105, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017, in his residence.
Joe was born May 16, 1911, in Hueysville, KY to the late Clifford Henry and Rebecca Prater Dyer. He graduated high school in 1930 and then attended Alice Lloyd Junior College and Eastern Kentucky State Teachers college. His first job was teaching in Appalachian Mountains in a one room school house and then on to various schools throughout Kentucky and Ohio teaching high school science, chemistry and physics along with coaching basketball and track.
He served in US Army Air Corps during World War II as a meteorologist forecasting weather while in the European Theatre. Joe settled in North Carolina in 1949 and operated various businesses including car rental, furniture store and real estate rental properties.
He helped organize the Bonnie Doone Volunteer Fire Department and the 71st High School marching band by helping to found the Band Boosters Club. He was a member of the 71st Ruritan Club and helped establish its Citizenship Essay Contest on the "Importance of Citizenship".
Joe was a member of Camp Ground UMC for 60 years and has served all various capacities as committee chairman and Sunday School teacher.
He received various honors throughout his life to include Kentucky Colonel by Commonwealth of Kentucky by Gov. Jones; received key and seal to City of Fayetteville by its citizens and City council for his contributions to the city; and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by State of North Carolina by Gov. McCrory.
Joe is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Gee Dyer; two daughters, Susan Dyer Granados of Asheville, NC and Robin Dyer Fields and husband Steve of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Sierra Granados of Portland, OR and Juan Granados of Asheville, NC; one great-grandchild, Maddison Granados; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by all ten of his siblings.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at 2 pm in Camp Ground United Methodist Church. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 pm to 2 pm Tuesday at the church.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Cape Fear Hospice, especially Jennifer, Jamie, Valerie, Laura, Paulette, Yettie and Bobbie for their wonderful care.
