FAYETTEVILLE — Joseph "Joe" Wilbur Walker Jr., 76, of Fayetteville passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, in Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville.
Joe was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Oct. 20, 1938, to the late Joseph Wilbur Walker Sr. and Ethel Hamilton Walker. He graduated from Auburn University in 1960. He was the owner and president of Ellis-Walker Builders Inc.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 2, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Haymount United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Goodwin officiating. A private family burial will be at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. The family will receive friends in the Haymount United Methodist Church Family Life Center from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Friday, May 1, 2015.
Joe was president of the Fayetteville Rotary Club. He served on the Salvation Army and Branch Bank & Trust Board. Joe was the co-founder and chair of the Rotary Father-Son Golf Tournament, where he funded a scholarship. He served on several boards and numerous church committees at Haymount United Methodist Church. Joe was a member of Haymount United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He played a big role in the vision and building of Camp Rockfish Bergland Retreat Center.
Joe loved the Boston Red Sox, Auburn Tigers, traveling with his wife and sharing a joke.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Melba Davis Walker; sons, J. Todd Walker and wife Kim, Mark Walker and wife Karly, and Brian Walker and wife Megan, all of Fayetteville; daughter, Tracey Whitehouse and husband Jamie of Asheville; and grandchildren, Blake Walker, Corie Walker, Miles Walker, Graham Whitehouse, Drew Walker, Jack Whitehouse, Abby Walker, Holt Walker, Kara Walker, Reese Walker, MacKenzie Walker, Mason Walker, Davis Walker and Joey Walker.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303 or the Salvation Army, 220 E. Russell St., Fayetteville, NC 28301.
