Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Judith Autry \\"Judy\\" Aycock, beloved Mama and Grandmamma, went home to our Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, to play music with Jesus in Heaven. Graduating from Flora MacDdonald College in 1947, having majored in church music and organ performance, she studied under noted organist and composer Marcel Dupre in Chicago. She then became organist at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte for a year and a half, then at First Methodist Church in Charlotte. In 1950, she married her husband, Bill, who preceded her in death in July 2009. They moved to Fayetteville in 1955, where she became organist at Haymount United Methodist Church, spending the next 48 years serving as organist, teaching piano lessons, and playing for countless weddings, funerals, recitals and choir practices, all the while raising four children and subsequently spoiling her loving grandchildren. In 2006, Judy \\"retired\\" from her post at Haymount United Methodist Church; a few months later, she was offered a position at MacPherson Presbyterian Church, also in Fayetteville, where she served as organist until her passing. She continued to volunteer her talent and energy for the Fellowship Choir at Haymount UMC, even playing jazz accompaniments at age 83, which she played with her characteristic style, grace and boundless enthusiasm. A lover of all nature, she dedicated her phenomenal musical talent to the glory of God throughout her life. She loved music and those for whom she played and touched countless lives with her astounding gifts of music and love. She made very many lifelong friendships and loved dearly and cherished her family and friends. She was the most humble of Christians, a giving spirit and supremely talented musician who joyfully used the gifts God gave her to bring joy to the lives of family, friends and complete strangers. Her passion for life, heart of gold and beautiful spirit made her truly a one-of-a kind lady who was and is deeply loved by many. It is unimaginable that such a lovely being is so suddenly gone. We love her so very much and will miss her terribly. Judy was the daughter of the late Leonidas and Ruth Autry of Charlotte, and the sister to Tommy, who preceded her in death by 44 years. Judy is survived by her four children; Jean Aycock (son-in-law Terry Frye and granddaughter Elizabeth Frye), Ann Harding (son-in-law David and granddaughter Caroline), Carolyn Aycock (grandchildren Carrie Amabile and David Nelson), and James Aycock (daughter-in-law Martha and grandchildren Samuel and Lydia), and two grandsons-in-law, Nick Amabile and Kevin Wagahoff. Her first great-grandchild and namesake, Ella Judith Amabile, is expected in February. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in the Commons Room at Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville. A celebration of Judy's life will be held in the sanctuary of Haymount United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, to be followed by burial in Cross Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, stories of Judy's life as well as donations to the SPCA and Alzheimer's Association at alz.org/index.asp in memory of her mother Ruth are appreciated. Services entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
