Julius "Curney" Gray Matthews, 91, of Hope Mills, NC, joined his heavenly father on January 10, 2024, due to complications associated with dementia.

Curney, the eldest of five children was born October 8, 1932, to the late Willie Gray Matthews and Daisy Sykes Matthews in Nash County.  He attended Hope Mills School and was later employed by Burlington Industries, followed by Sycamore Dairy, and retired from Estes Trucking Company. He was a member of Hope Mills Church of God where he enjoyed fellowshipping and praising God until his declining health prevented him from doing so.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 57 years, Louise Gore Matthews, his grandson William Gray Myrick, and his brothers Jerry and Gilbert Matthews.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Margie Johnson Matthews, his daughters Vicky Myrick (Colon) and Sherry Burnette (Todd), his stepdaughter Janet Ridgen (John R.), his granddaughters Brook and Courtney Myrick, his grandson, Allen Burnette (Michelle), his step-grandson Patrick Ridgen, his great grandchildren Addison and Camden Burnette, and his sisters Nancy McDowell and Carolyn "Doll" Matthews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home with a service at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024, in the Jernigan-Warren Chapel. Burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park, 2301 Ramsey St, Fayetteville, NC 28301.
