Kathryn M. Zollars, 89, of Fayetteville, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2011. She was a resident of The Carolina Inn of Village Green.
Kathryn was born on January 7, 1922 in Cairo, West Virginia to Chalmer and Theresa Brabham. She was raised in Akron, Ohio and attended Coventry High School where she was crowned Homecoming Queen. It was there she met Bob, the love of her life, who nicknamed her Bebe because of her short stature. She married him in 1942 and lived the life of an Army wife for twenty plus years, finally settling in Fayetteville. Wherever they were stationed, whether it was in the tropics of Puerto Rico or the snowy scenes of Germany, Bebe could always be counted on to lend a helping hand, either as a Red Cross volunteer, a Brownie troop leader or baking her wonderful banana bread for a neighbor.
She worked at the Veterans Hospital for twenty years as a teletype operator and an eligibility specialist.
After she was widowed in 1965, she became involved with beauty pageants as a social outlet and a way to meet new people. As her interest and expertise grew, she became more in demand, serving as a Miss America preliminary judge, Field Director for the Miss North Carolina Pageant, state pageant hostess chairperson, and Executive Director of the Cumberland County Scholarship Pageant Association. She also served as business manager and traveling companion to Miss North Carolina and Miss Fayetteville. Her top notch ability to groom and prepare contestants for pageants was evidenced by the fact that most of the contestants she worked with placed in the top ten at the state pageant and several of \\"her girls\\" won the title of Miss North Carolina. She was happiest when she was backstage organizing, helping with all aspects of the production, contestants and crew. When the Miss Fayetteville Pageant folded, she was the driving force behind the revival of the pageant, organizing a host of pageant enthusiasts and renaming it the Cumberland County Scholarship Pageant . She took great pride in providing opportunities for character development, community service and most of all, scholarships for young women. In appreciation for her dedication to the Miss Fayetteville Pageant, the Miss Congeniality award was named in her honor.
As an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi, a community service sorority, she received The Order of the Rose.
One of her greatest joys was when her family gathered together. Whether it was a birthday or a holiday or just plain potluck, it was always special to her. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will greatly miss their Grandma Bebe.
She played a mean piano, always wanted to learn to tap dance and loved the color purple, especially when covered with sequins!
She always wanted to be somebody, and she was.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Zollars, daughter Michele Stone, granddaughter Kathryn Anderson, and brothers Granville and Jerry Brabham.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Pamela Garrett and husband Kenny; Robin Anderson and husband Bruce; grandchildren Brian Garrett and wife Taryn, Joel Garrett, Robert Stone and wife Jessica, Delee Stone, Emily Anderson, six great grandchildren and countless friends who were blessed to know her.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, August 12, 2011 at 2 pm in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
She will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Bob, in Arlington National Cemetery.
