Kenneth Edward Banks, 64, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday, June 27, 2008, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Mr. Banks has been a practicing attorney in Fayetteville for more than 30 years. He was a 1961 graduate of Fayetteville Senior High School. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University with a bachelor of science degree in political science and history, and taught in the North Carolina public schools upon graduation. He holds an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He received his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was in the top third of his class. Upon graduation from law school, he went to Atlanta, where he worked as a general attorney with the Federal Trade Commission in the areas of consumer protection and consumer affairs. He was transferred during the energy crisis of 1973 to work as assistant regional counsel of the Federal Energy Office in Atlanta. Mr. Banks returned to Fayetteville to work as an assistant district attorney, and since 1976 he has been a practicing attorney and owner of his own law firm, The Law Offices of Kenneth E. Banks, J.D.P.A., concentrating his practice in the area of bankruptcy, personal injury practice and consumer law. He was also an arbitrator judge for the Cumberland County Court System. Mr. Banks was a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, Bankruptcy Section (NCBA), North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and National Association of Consumer Advocates, and was a General Alumni Association Life Member, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has been a featured speaker on consumer bankruptcy law at local bankruptcy seminars, conferences and continuing legal education programs. Mr. Banks was a member of Mount Carmel Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a teacher of Evangelism Explosion at the church. He taught law at Fayetteville Technical Community College for the paralegal program. He was also an adjunct professor at Methodist University at night. Mr. Banks is survived by his sister, Patricia Banks Maitland of Fayetteville; his beloved friend, Carolyn Jordan of St. Pauls; his beloved extended family, Michael Jordan and wife Brenda of Lumberton, Scott Jordan of St. Pauls, Todd Jordan and wife Erica of Hope Mills, and Kevin Jordan and wife Dixie of St. Pauls; and their seven children.
