Mrs. La Rue Lancaster, 91, of Fayetteville went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 10, 2011.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 1pm at Berean Baptist Church located at 517 Glensford Drive, Fayetteville, officiated by Pastor Sean Harris. The service will be webcast for those who cannot be in attendance at www.bereanbaptistchurch.org. Interment will follow in the Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.
Born to Thomas and Sophia Edwards of Bladenboro, La Rue was married to Ralph Thompson, Sr., who died in 1954. Her siblings: Millard D. Edwards, Dewitt Edwards, Juratha Edwards, Duawn Edwards, Bonnie Mae Edwards, Mary Lina Hester, and Willie Burney have all preceded her in death.
La Rue loved reading, painting, sewing, crocheting, cooking, and entertaining. As a young widow, La Rue determined to rear her children with the knowledge that salvation is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ. She lived a dedicated life before them, teaching the importance of believing the Bible to be the word of God.
The Lord knew that La Rue and her three children needed a godly man to guide, provide and protect them. While serving as a youth leader of Grace Baptist Church, La Rue met Lieutenant George Lancaster, Jr. She and George were married in 1956 and continued serving the Lord together until his health failed in 2010.
In 1967, the Lord allowed them the privilege of having Berean Baptist Church founded in their home at 2305 Bragg Boulevard. This church was dedicated to the fundamentals of the Christian faith and the inerrancy of the Word of God. Today, the church formed from their home is Fayetteville's largest Independent Baptist church. As charter members, La Rue and George served as teachers, greeters, and helpers in door-to-door evangelism.
In 1967, George and La Rue also became involved with the Gideons. Together, they enjoyed sharing salvation's story and placing Bibles in motels, hotels, nursing homes, schools, and hospitals.
La Rue believed in hospitality. Whenever missionaries or special speakers visited the church, they were invited to the Lancaster home to enjoy a meal, fellowship, and lodging. Many happy times of sharing the faith of Christ and singing hymns and gospel songs with friends and family are remembered in their living room.
La Rue is survived by her two sons: Ralph Thompson and his wife Pat, of Raleigh; and Morris Thompson and his wife Gale, of Fayetteville; her daughter Jo Thompson Burgess and her husband Hampton, of Ramseur; her two grandsons: Scott Thompson of Reno, Nevada and Brandon Thompson and his wife Heather, of Fayetteville; and her three great granddaughters: Briana Thompson, Hailey Thompson , and Madison Thompson, also of Fayetteville.
