Obituary

Lee R. Alvis FAYETTEVILLE — Retired Army Master Sgt. Lee R. Alvis, 91, a resident of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Sybil Jean Alvis; his children, Vickie Alvis Erben and husband Frank of Fayetteville, Sandy Alvis Scarboro of Fayetteville, Tammy Alvis Harmon and husband Jeff of Littleton, Colo.; and six grandchildren, Christina Erben, Caitlin Erben, Miles Scarboro, Grace Scarboro, Becky Harmon and Ben Harmon. Mr. Alvis served twice in the Army. He served one enlistment in World War II, followed by another enlistment in 1954 in which he served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. During his military career, he earned numerous awards and decorations: National Defense Service Medal 1st OLC, World War II Victory Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal (six awards), Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, American Campaign Medal, Vietnam Civil Action Medal 1st class, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. After 22 years of military service, he worked 15 years in civil service for the commissary system and then worked 21 years at Walmart on Skibo Road as a greeter, retiring in June of 2013. He had been a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church for 45 years. He will be remembered for his devotion to God, his dedication to his family and his positive nature and ever-present smile. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Jernigan-Warren Memorial Chapel with Chaplin Tim Crawley officiating. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation's Friends of the Children. The address is 101 Robeson St., Suite 106, Fayetteville, NC 28301. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, from 12:00 to 1:00 at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 in the Jernigan Warren Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street with Full Military Honors.
