Obituary

Leon Allen Leonard, 72, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. His passing came on the 51st wedding anniversary of his beloved late wife, Kun Sin Leonard—a meaningful reunion of enduring love.

Leon was born on November 16, 1953, in Oconto, Wisconsin, to the late Merrill Leonard and Pearl Ristow Leonard.

A man of remarkable skill and determination, Leon was truly a jack of all trades. He had a gift for restoring cars, boats, and homes, bringing new life to everything he touched. In his leisure time, he found joy in downhill skiing, water skiing, and golfing. Among his proudest personal achievements was scoring a hole-in-one at Ryder Golf Course.

Leon was known for his high standards and unwavering commitment to excellence. Whether serving alongside soldiers or firefighters, he led with discipline, strength, and a deep sense of responsibility.

Staff Sergeant Leon A. Leonard honorably served his country in the United States Army for over twenty years, from September 1972 until his retirement in November 1992. He began his military journey with Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, followed by Advanced Training at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. Rising to the challenge of leadership, he first served as an 11B30 Infantryman before transitioning into his role as Military Fire Chief (51M30) with the 89th Engineer Detachment, 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps.

Over the course of his distinguished career—spanning 20 years and 5 months, including more than four years of foreign service—Leon exemplified the Army's core values. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was nominated for Sergeant First Class prior to his retirement.

His service took him across the world, including assignments at Camp Casey in South Korea; Fort Carson, Colorado; and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He spent the final twelve years of his military career at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, with the 20th Engineer Brigade.

Leon participated in several major operations, including Big Pine Two in Honduras, Bright Star in Egypt, and Operation Desert Shield/Storm in Saudi Arabia. His dedication and professionalism earned him national recognition. In 1990, he was named 3rd Runner-up for the Army-wide GEICO Service Award. In 1991, he was selected by Firehouse Magazine to attend the National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington, D.C., where he was honored as a guest alongside President George H. W. Bush and other distinguished leaders. He was also invited to a preview screening of the film Backdraft with President Bush and director Ron Howard.

His many decorations include the National Defense Service Ribbon with Silver Star, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, among numerous others.

Leon is survived by his daughters, Marcie Hoppe and Karen Lyncook-Fladger, SGT Retired, and son-in-law Britton Fladger; his cherished grandchildren, PVT James Hoppe, Natalie Hoppe, Jasmine Lyncook, Brian Lyncook, Jr., and Brooklyn Fladger; his siblings, Eugene Leonard, Linden Leonard, and Cheryl Gruszynski; and his bonus daughters, Shannon Frazier, MAJ, Retired and Amande Robidoux.
