Obituary

Retired Army Colonel Leslie George Gibbings, 73, died Monday, December 11, 2006, in Fayetteville. Viewing will occur at Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY 10928, from 10 am to noon on Thursday, December 21, 2006. Burial services will be held in the West Point Military Academy Catholic Holy Trinity Chapel and National Cemetery, West Point, NY with full military honors at 1:30 pm, Thursday, December 21, 2006. Mr. Gibbings was born Nov. 2, 1933. He was the son of Leslie and Marie Cote Gibbings. He attended Cathedral High School in Springfield, Mass; and upon graduation attended Amherst College. In 1954, Senator Edward Boland of Massachusetts appointed him to attend West Point Military Academy, Company A-2, which he did so proudly from 1954 to 1958. Upon graduation, he was commissioned infantry and served his nation for 26 years, retiring in 1984. He served two combat tours, 1965 and 1969, in Vietnam, earning both the Bronze Star and Air Medals for valor. Key assignments include: company commander and battalion S3 in the 101st Airborne Division, battalion commander of 4th-20th Infantry, \\"Sykes Regulars\\", Army War College graduate, and operations officer in the Office of Joint Chief of Staff, and Army G3, serving at the Pentagon. He second career was with Dynamics Research Corporation as a defense contractor in Andover, Mass. Mr. Gibbings is survived by his son, LTC. Thomas Gibbings and his wife, Julie; brothers, Robert Gibbings, Alfred Gibbings and George Gibbings; sisters, Lorraine Hansen, Louise Sliwinski and Arline Sousa; grandchildren, John Gibbings, Ashley Gibbings and Emily Gibbings; and former wife of 36 years, Barbara M. Gibbings. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Jean Galvin and Elaine Cochrane.
