Obituary

Lillian Shain Elfmon Kent, 97, of Delray Beach, FL, died on Monday, February 16, 2015 in Delray Beach FL. Born June 4, 1917, in Wilmington, NC, she was the daughter of the late Anna and Fred Lema and Isaac Shain. After graduating from the University of Georgia, she married Dr. Samuel Leon Elfmon. Throughout their life, primarily in Fayetteville, NC, she was active in numerous volunteer activities. She served as president of the Fayetteville Woman's Club, the Fayetteville PTA, the Cumberland County Girl Scouts, the Women's Medical Auxiliary, Hadassah, and was a Worthy Mason of the Eastern Star. She served on the boards of the United Services Fund, the Civic Music Association, the Cumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Cancer Society, the Methodist College Foundation, Highsmith Hospital and the Seaboard Region of Hadassah. She was a member of Beth Israel Congregation for 77 years. She was predeceased by her two dear husbands, Samuel L. Elfmon and Paul Kent and her loving son-in-law, Joel Fleishman. She was the older sister of the late Herbert Shain, Arthur Shain and Edwin (Merle) Shain. She is survived by her two beloved daughters, Linda Elfmon Fleishman of Greensboro, NC and Shila Elfmon Baer and husband, Richard Baer of Raleigh, NC; four grandsons and their wives, Craig and Sandy Fleishman, Adam and Wendy Fleishman, Phillip and Gianna and Shain and Kim Elden; nine great-grandchildren, Emily and Ashley Fleishman, Sydney, Sawyer and Sabrina Fleishman, Noah and Maya, Ethan and Avery Elden; sisters-in-law Annette Shain and Thelma Shain, and many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Lillian lived a long, active life of extraordinary good health. Full of grace and graciousness, she was known for her appreciation of all things beautiful, including a wide circle of lifelong friends. As a leader in the Fayetteville community, she was a major force for good.

Grateful for her love of life, family and friends, her keen intelligence and productivity, her optimism, her kindnesses towards others and ever-present charm, she will be remembered as a role model for those who aspire to follow in her path. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 on Friday, February 20th at Beth Israel Cemetery, Gale Street, Fayetteville, NC. Jernigan Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville, NC is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
