Linnie "Dale"
(Byrd) Averitt
August 5, 1936 – June 29, 2022
Linnie "Dale" Byrd Averitt, born August 5, 1936, in Dillon, SC, died Wednesday, June 29, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus F. Byrd and Retha Church Byrd, brothers, Rufus Franklin Byrd, Jr., and Jimmy R. Byrd, all of Florence SC, and infant son, David Franklin Averitt.
She is survived by a sister, Nadine Blackmon of Florence; many nieces and nephews and their families, that she dearly loved and enjoyed over the years.
She dearly loved her children. She leaves her wonderful, loving and kind son, Alex C. Averitt, Jr.; her grandchildren, Angela Leah Averitt and Joshua C. Averitt of Lumber Bridge; great granddaughters, Emily Danielle Averitt and Dacey Marie Averitt, whose brightness brought her much joy and love.
Dale was a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a facilitator for the Grief Support Group for several years.
No matter where Mother lived, in Virginia or North Carolina, she was always involved in the community. She served on many boards, to mention a few, Tidewater Cancer Society Board; Maryview Medical Center and Hospice Board; American and Virginia Society Director of Volunteer Services; Red Cross Board of Directors; American Business Women's Association; and the World of Women's Association (WOW). She was a sponsor of the Shelter for Battered Women, which her heart went out to. She was Director of Volunteers for 30 years, at Portsmouth General Hospital in Portsmouth, VA and Heartland Home Care and Hospice in Virginia Beach. She spoke of them as her extended family away from her family. During her career years, she was honored with many outstanding achievement awards. She enjoyed classical music, the theater, shag and ballroom dancing, sailing and a good book. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, friend, a loving mother, and grandmother. She taught us all about dignity, honesty, respect, trust, and most of all love. We will all miss her, but we celebrate the life that God let us have and so enjoy.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2022, at 3 p.m. in the Jernigan-Warren Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Florence Memorial Gardens in Florence, SC.
