Lucile Grooms Black

Lucile Grooms Black, 98, of Fayetteville, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Trinity Place in Albemarle, NC.

Born in Parkton, NC on February 24, 1928, Lucile was the beloved daughter of the late Manley Howard Grooms and Lula King Grooms.

She lived and worked on the family farm until she graduated from Hope Mills High School in 1945. After graduation, Lucile worked at Belk’s in downtown Fayetteville for five years before starting to work for First Citizens Bank. After marrying William Wesley “Bill” Black on March 12, 1955, they traveled around the south while Bill worked for a masonry company, eventually ending up in Jacksonville, FL where they lived for many years. She stayed in the banking industry for almost 40 years, retiring from First Union National Bank in 1990, at which time she moved back to Fayetteville and was a member of Camp Ground Methodist Church for over 25 years where she was very active and sang in the choir.

In addition to her parents, Lucile was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William W. “Bill” Black; her four sisters, Elizabeth Melvin, Ernestine Cox, Ada Jones, and Joyce Coleman; and her eight brothers, James Roy Grooms, Floyd Nash Grooms, Thomas Howard Grooms, Ernest Stacy Grooms, John Paul Grooms, Gillis Murray Grooms, Charles Edwin Grooms, and Manley Eugene Grooms.

She is survived by her sister, Sue Cain, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will lovingly remember her.

A Graveside service for Lucile will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 11 am at Camp Ground United Methodist Church Cemetery.
