FAYETTEVILLE — Mrs. Mae Bunnell Smith, 95, long-time resident of Fayetteville, died May 25, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Winfred (Wink) Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 30, 1919, in Lumber Bridge, and graduated from Parkton High School. Moving with her family to Fayetteville in the 1930s, she worked for Sears Roebuck as a buyer and assisted in the opening of the downtown store. She was a devoted wife and mother and worked with her husband in rental real estate for a number of years. Involved in local politics, she served as precinct chairman in Haymount, a job which she dearly loved. She was a devoted member of Highland Presbyterian Church and the Emma Lee Howie Bible class for 65 years.
Friends and family remember her as an active person who had a love for life and people. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Georgia Smith Rose and the Rev. Dr. William Frederick Rose of Charlotte; three grandchildren, William F. Rose Jr., and wife, Elizabeth, and great-grandson, Harrison, of Charlotte, Anna Rose Medley and husband, Christopher, of Chapel Hill, and Caroline Smith Rose of Charlotte. Other survivors include her loving caregivers and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and reception for family and friends will be held at Highland Presbyterian Church June 20, 2015 at 3 p.m. preceded by family burial at Lafayette Memorial Park.
