Obituary

Fayetteville, NC - Major John Robert McRainey, Jr. passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in his home. A lifelong Fayetteville native, he had served as Chief Jailer of the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office since 2004. He also served as a Cumberland County Alcohol Beverage Control Officer from 1981 to 1991. He attended North Carolina State University and was a graduate of Methodist College. John deeply loved God and his family. He was an avid sportsman who greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. John held an I.G.F.A. World Record from 2005 for catching a 96 pound Black Drum. He was an Eagle Scout and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville. Most importantly John was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. He personified integrity, generosity and kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents Bob and Margie McRainey. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kaye Lifsey McRainey; and a daughter Elizabeth Elaine McRainey of Durham. He is also survived by brothers, Dan McRainey of Ocean Isle Beach, William McRainey of Shallotte; and sister-in-law Dianne McRainey. He is also survived by a sister, Beth McRainey Hargrove of Savannah and brother-in-law Joe Hargrove. Other survivors include five nephews and nieces and many cousins. A public viewing will be held Thursday, October 17 from 10am-4pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. in First Presbyterian Church sanctuary, 102 Ann Street in Fayetteville, N.C. 28301. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church parlor from 9:30 till 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Third Century Campaign of First Presbyterian Church, 102 Ann Street, Fayetteville, N.C. 28301; or to the Salvation Army 220 East Russell Street, Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.
